Six Marks Qualify for NCAA Indoors
Veronica Campbell        FAYETTEVILLE - Headlined by Veronica Campbell's pair of qualifiers in the 60 and 200-meter dashes, the University of Arkansas Lady Razorback track team is set to showcase six qualifying marks at the 2004 NCAA Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville.
For the Lady Razorbacks, Campbell enters the 2004 meet with the fastest time in the nation in the 200-meter dash at a near NCAA record 22.51. Her time is almost three tenths of a second faster than her closest competitor and just two hundredths off the all-time collegiate best. She is also ranked among the nation's elite in the 60 where she sits second, just three hundredths off the nation's leading mark.
"Wow, this is great," Arkansas head track coach Lance Harter said. "When you're living on the bubble, it's always a pleasure to get more athletes into the meet. I think that we faired well and I'm looking forward to watching our young ladies compete."
Harter's surprise stems from his predictions of how far the NCAA Committee would go down on the descending order list before meeting their maximum number of participating athletes. Early thoughts only pinpointed three Lay'Backs competing at the championships, but Arkansas picked up six athletes and six marks instead.
Joining Campbell at the championships are junior Kerri-Ann Mitchell in the 60-meter dash, junior Kasia Williams in the 60-meter hurdles, senior Jennifer Lincoln in the pole vault and Arkansas' 4x400-meter relay of Campbell, Mitchell, Aneita Denton and LaShaunte'a Moore.
Williams picked up her national qualifying mark last weekend at the Florida Fast Times Last Chance meet where she nearly eclipsed Arkansas' school record for the 55-meter hurdles. Lincoln qualified at the SEC Championships when she vaulted to 13-3.5 to finish as the SEC runner-up. The Lady'Back 4x4 relay ran an Arkansas school record at the Tyson Invitational for their qualifier in mid-February.
