Picks up First Spring Win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Arkansas
Lady Razorback soccer team picked up its first win of the spring season
with a 2-0 decision over the University of Memphis on March 31.
Picking up goals from sophomore Morgan McCord
and senior Jenni Brashear, the Lady'Backs not only were able to muster
their first victory of the spring season, but also notched their first
"It was nice for the women to get their reward
for all the hard work they have put in," Arkansas head soccer coach Gordon
Henderson said. "I've been pleased with the way that we played the last
two games, but we had difficulty putting the ball into the net. This time
we played well and got the goals to show for it."
Placing both scores in the net in the first
half, the Lady Razorbacks took the early lead and held on thanks to a
solid back line. In fact, while the Lady Razorbacks scored two goals,
perhaps could have had more as they pinged the crossbar once and were
robbed by two brilliant saves by the Memphis goalkeeper.
Arkansas' first goal was the result of a direct
free kick from nearly 25 yards. Freshman Allison Harris took the shot
from the right side and sent a screamer to the far post that was initially
saved by the Memphis goalkeeper, but she failed to corral the rebound
and McCord cleaned up the trash in the front of the net to put Arkansas
Not long after, it was Brashear's turn to score as
another Arkansas attack from the right side produced excellent results.
Sophomore defender Katie Taylor took an attacking roll and sent a cross
from the right side through the mixer where Brashear was able to punch
in the Lady'Backs second score.
"I think that our scoring opportunities have
increased with the new system that we are implementing," Henderson said.
"It is nice to get that first win, but I'm really happy for the team to
get the reward for their work."
The Lady Razorbacks are back in action on
Saturday, April 3, when they take on the defending Big XII tournament
champions, Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., at 1:00 p.m.
The Cowgirls enter the match with an impressive 5-0-2 record including
a win over LSU and a tie with Ole Miss.
